Book Reviews

The first book to be reviewed in our monthly book review series is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  Thanks to Brandon Ray for the review!

The Story: You follow Katniss Everdeen, the daughter of a now deceased coal miner living in district twelve. There are twelve active districts, each district has a specialty and they are all ruled by the Capital. There were originally thirteen districts but the Capital destroyed one in a war. Now, in remembrance that the Capitol still rules the district, every year they hold the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a competition where they randomly select a boy and girl from each district to fight to the death in a deadly arena. Depending on how old you are you have more of a chance of getting chosen. You can also get food from the Capitol and it increases your chance of getting chosen. The elections are going around the districts and when it reaches district twelve Primrose Everdeen, the sister of Katniss, gets chosen. Katniss, not wanting to see her sister die, volunteers in her place. The male that gets chosen is also someone she has met before. From there you follow the journey of Katniss how she survives training and partakes in the Hunger Games.

Is the story any good?: Well, yes. This is a good book but there are some flaws with it. There are romantic undertones and albeit sometimes amusing can interrupt the story at times. Other than that there are a few places in the story they could have shortened but they are few and far between.

Sequels?: Yes, this book does have two sequels.
Are the sequels any good?: Yes, I do believe this is the best book in the series I would suggest the sequels as well.

Is there a movie?: Yes there is a movie.
Is the movie any good?: Sadly there are some glaring flaws in the movie. The main one being if you have not read the book the movie will be confusing at times. But I consider it a good companion piece to the book.

Overall: This is a good book and I would recommend it. Sometimes this book can be overrated but it is still worth reading. Sometimes tedious with pointless romantic undertones and to descriptive at points. Do not get me wrong, I love this book, I am not going to let that blind me from any possible flaws however.
